08 Peace Pole
The planting of Peace Poles was started in Japan as a grassroots project in 1976. Peace Poles have four or more sides displaying the message ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ in a different language on each side.
Planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together. They are a constant reminder and focal point for us to visualize and act to create world peace in all areas of our lives – social, environmental, political and in business. Planting a Peace Pole connects you to others around the world wishing to stimulate a cultural shift in attitude and a greater awareness of the process of peace.
The hand-crafted white wooden pole in Coventry Cathedral garden displays the message ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ in English, French, German and Japanese. Any of the world’s different languages may be used to reflect the Peace Pole’s local community, their wishes for the wider world or areas of conflict.
They are an internationally recognised symbol for peace and it is estimated that there are now over 250,000 Peace Poles across the globe.
